The Pittsburgh Penguins signed goaltender Eric Hartzell to a one-year entry-level contract, the team announced on Sunday.

The Pittsburgh Penguins out-dueled several other teams to secure the rights to the prize free agent goaltender.

Hartzell led Quinnipiac University to the Frozen Four, the first ever appearance in the tournament for the university, before Yale ended their great run in the championship game over the weekend. Hartzell was a finalist for the Hobey Baker this season, posting a .933 save percentage and 1.57 goals-against average in 42 stellar games, with a 30-7-5 record on the season.
The native of White Bear Lake, Minnesota finishes up four years at Quinnipiac after coming out of the USHL at Sioux Falls. Hartzell has enjoyed a tremendous career in the NCAA and has been one of the top goaltenders in the country the past three years, finally shouldering most of the load this season after playing in 28 and 30 games the past two seasons, respectively.
Hartzell earned the ECAC Hockey Ken Dryden Goaltender of the Year award, as well as being named as the ECAC Player of the Year for 2013.
