Mike Smith injury: Coyotes goalie out with lower body injury

Jason LaBarbera will replace him in net against the Sharks.

USA TODAY Sports

The Phoenix Coyotes will be without top netminder Mike Smith on Monday, as he will be out with a "lower body injury." He's day-to-day. Backup Jason LaBarbera will start against the San Jose Sharks instead.

Smith dealt with a groin injury earlier this season.

This is bad news on two fronts for Phoenix, a team scratching and clawing for a playoff spot. Smith is 6-3-1 with 2.10 GAA and .943 save percentage in his career against the Sharks, and has been playing very well as of late. A long-term injury could derail the Coyotes playoff hopes, but the good news is that the Coyotes are off until Thursday after Monday’s game.
