The Detroit Red Wings plan to discuss a contract extension with forward Pavel Datsyuk prior to June 20, according to general manager Ken Holland as told to Ansar Khan of MLive.com.

Datsyuk will be entering the final year of a seven-year, $46.9 million contract that carries an annual average value of $6.7 million against the salary cap next season. He will become an unrestricted free agent after next year and some believe he might return to Russia to play in the Kontinental Hockey League.

The Red Wings are interested in signing Datsyuk to an extension on July 5. Holland confirmed that he spoke with Datsyuk’s agent Gary Greenstein during the team’s recent homestand. While conversations were not contract-related, Holland stated plans to negotiate would occur prior to June 20.
Greenstein stated that Datsyuk has yet to decide what he plans to do following next season.
However, the agent made it clear that if Datsyuk decided to play in North America, he would only play for the Red Wings.
