New Jersey Devils forward prospect Stefan Matteau has been released by his junior team, the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada, according to the team on Monday afternoon.

Stefan Matteau is no longer a member of the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada after a series of tumultuous events led to his release Monday morning.

Matteau was benched during Game 2 of the Armada’s playoff series against Baie-Comeau Drakkar in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League’s semifinal. It is believed that Matteau was benched because of a slashing penalty that head coach Jean-François Houle considered irresponsible. The 19-year-old apparently took exception to that action and quit the team. The situation became so hostile that Matteau returned home on a fan bus rather than the team bus.
To make matters even more salacious, Matteau’s father, Stéphane Matteau, is an assistant coach for the Armada.
Where this leaves the younger Matteau remains to be seen. He has already played 17 games with the Devils this season and already began the first year of his entry-level contract. New Jersey has three games remaining this season and has been eliminated from playoff contention.
