Penguins vs. Rangers: Marc-Andre Fleury attempts save with his bare hand

Brave? Stupid? A little of both?

Justin K. Aller

Every Penguins fan's heart stopped on Friday when their franchise goaltender risked his left hand for the sake of the team.

Marc-Andre Fleury managed to lose his glove when Brian Boyle flicked a shot at him from the crease. Unfortunately for him, there was no time to retrieve it. The play came right back around in front and Fleury raised his bare hand to try and make the save.

Let’s stop for a minute and consider the implications here. Fleury was prepared to stop a hard rubber puck hurtling at him faster than most city speed limits from mere feet away ... with his bare, unprotected hand. That’s a season-ending injury waiting to happen.

Luckily for his team, the shot never reached him and he was able to get his glove back from the ref.
