Rangers vs. Capitals Game 5 update: All tied up thanks to Caps’ penalty-kill heroics
New York’s ineffectiveness on special teams is why this game is tied at 1-1 after two.
As a result, the two are tied 1-1 heading into the third period. About halfway through the second, Brian Boyle was having himself a pretty good defensive shift. He blocked a shot and then got back in time to break up Mike Ribeiro's rush to the net. And then he did something dumb, slashing Ribeiro and sending the Caps on the power play.
Joel Ward immediately cashed in, and John Tortorella was not pleased with the whole situation.
The Capitals later gave the Rangers essentially four consecutive minutes of power play time to work with. The final period shot total might be 6-5 for the Caps, but New York had about five shots blocked on the power play. The outstanding special teams play needs to continue for Washington if it wants to close out this game.
