Jason Spezza has begun skating again and may return to the ice for the Ottawa Senators in the second round of the playoffs. Spezza only played in five games this season and underwent surgery on February 5 to repair a herniated disk in his back.

General manager Bryan Murray confirmed that Spezza has been making progress and spent two days skating with the team’s taxi squad, the players called up from AHL Binghamton. But Spezza still isn’t ready to return yet.
“He’s got to practice a few times with the team before Paul [McLean] thinks about making a change,” Murray said. “But there’s light at the end of the tunnel.”
McLean said that Spezza will not play at the start of the series, but did not rule out a return later in the series. Spezza had 84 points in 2011-12, fourth in the NHL.
The Senators didn't have a problem scoring in the first round without Spezza. They averaged 4.4 goals per game in their 4-1 series win over the Canadiens.
