Casey Cizikas injury: Islanders forward nicked in the face by Simon Despres’ skate

That was almost horrific.

Justin K. Aller

Islanders forward Casey Cizikas left the ice for repairs in the first period of Game 6 against the Penguins, and he narrowly avoided what could've been an ugly, ugly injury.

Shortly after John Tavares put the Islanders up 1-0, Cizikas tried to lay a hit on Simon Despres in the Penguins' zone. Unfortunately, it very nearly cost him his neck.

Goodness. This picture shows just how close that blade was to doing some real damage:

Let’s hope Cizikas just needs a few stitches.

UPDATE: Cizikas has already returned to the ice. We can all breathe easier now. What a close call.
