Penguins vs. Senators Game 5 update: Territorial Pens lead after one period
The Senators trail 1-0 in an elimination game. Can Pittsburgh keep commanding the pace?
Pittsburgh and Ottawa spent the first six minutes of Game 5 playing a game of puck possession: not a lot of shots on net and a lot of chasing each other around the rink. Pittsburgh was the more aggressive of the two, challenging entry into the offensive zone and pushing the pace back up the ice.
That paid off when Matt Cooke blazed past Jared Cowen to gather a dumped puck in the Senators' zone. Cooke held up and fired it over to Mark Eaton, who found Brenden Morrow in front of the net for the first goal of the game.
Toronto reviewed the goal to see if Morrow kicked it in, but video replay confirmed the puck went in off his stick.
The Senators got a chance to tie it up late in the period when Sidney Crosby got called for the most phantom of hooking penalties, but looked relatively ineffective on the power play. They need to capitalize on those chances when they get them, because Pittsburgh is completely dominating possession so far in this game.
