The Chicago Blackhawks are well on their way to staving off elimination after taking a 3-1 lead in the second period of Game 5 against the Detroit Red Wings.

Chicago’s power play finally came alive, scoring twice to secure a 3-1 lead in the second period.

The first real chance of the period for either side came when Dave Bolland goaded Justin Abdelkader into nullifying the impending Wings' power play with a penalty of his own. C'mon, Justin.
Jonathan Toews very nearly scored on the 4-on-4, but Jimmy Howard barely kept the puck out of the net with his skate. When the teams got their men out of the box, Detroit started charging back. A sweet rush up the ice led to the equalizing goal from Dan Cleary, noted playoff hero.
Detroit continued their parade to the sin bin, however, and it started to cost them for the first time in the series. With Drew Miller in the box for hooking, Andrew Shaw deflected a Brent Seabrook shot past Jimmy Howard to retake the lead. Then Justin Abdelkader got sent off yet again, and Jonathan Toews scored his first goal of the playoffs.
