New York Rangers general manager Glen Sather formally addressed the media on Wednesday afternoon to discuss the firing of head coach John Tortorella.
John Tortorella fired: Glen Sather discusses Rangers decision
The New York Rangers have fired head coach John Tortorella. General manager Glen Sather (sort of) discusses the decision.

Sather opted to speak in generalities and was unwilling to go in-depth as to why Tortorella was relieved of his duties. The GM did admit that Tortorella seemed unprepared for the decision and was genuinely shocked at his dismissal. Sather stated that the decision was not based on a specific event or incident. When addressing what he might look for in Tortorella’s successor, Sather once again remained nondescript.
Speculation had risen that goaltender Henrik Lundqvist's comments earlier this week might have played a part in the decision to move on from Tortorella. Sather denied that they were a factor. However, the manager did express a desire to extend Lundqvist to a long-term contract extension this summer.
In terms of Brad Richards, Sather said the organization as a whole decided to scratch him for the final two games of the season. His future with the team will be discussed at length when the organization holds internal meetings in California this June.
Sather concluded the call by confirming that he will remain the the team’s general manager and president next season.
