In a bizarre turn of events, the Red Wings avoided elimination in the dying seconds of the third period because they took a penalty.
Blackhawks vs. Red Wings Game 7: Hjalmarsson’s potential game-winning goal waved off
Kyle Quincey saved the Wings’ season by taking a penalty.
No, really. The Blackhawks charged down the ice with about a minute left and the game tied at 1-1, and Niklas Hjalmarsson seemingly scored the game-winning goal with a slap shot past Jimmy Howard.
Not so fast. The officials immediately waved the goal off, even as United Center rocked in celebration. Apparently while the play was developing, Kyle Quincey and Brandon Saad were doing this.
As you can see in the GIF below, the referee behind the play called the penalties before Hjalmarsson’s shot went off.
Both players were assessed two minutes for roughing. So instead of a series-winning goal, the Blackhawks and Red Wings played scoreless 4-on-4 hockey the rest of the way, and this game is headed to overtime. Wow.
