Capitals vs. Rangers Game 3 update: All tied up despite penalty parade

Washington is lucky to be tied after two periods.

Debby Wong-USA TODAY Sports

Remember when we said the Capitals would have to cut down on penalties to win Game 3? Well, it was a nice idea. Washington apparently didn't read our first period recap.

And yet they're still in this game. The Caps and Rangers are tied at 2-2 after two periods, even though New York has had six power play chances.

The only time the Rangers would score on the man advantage is when Derick Brassard fired a wrister past Braden Holtby just 1:23 into the frame, giving the Rangers a 2-1 lead. Holtby's tripping penalty on Rick Nash was the reason the Rangers were on the power play in the first place.

The Capitals took three more penalties, but New York did nothing with them. In fact, the Caps have looked almost dominant at times in this one. The shot totals are nearly even (22-21 for the Rangers) and Henrik Lundqvist has had to do things like this to keep his team alive.

Mike Green finally broke through for the Caps, firing a howitzer past Lundqvist with just over three minutes left in the period.
