Stars get permission to speak with Dallas Eakins

The Stars are eying Dallas Eakins for their head coaching job.

Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

The Dallas Stars have requested and received permission to speak with Toronto Marlies head coach Dallas Eakins, according Darren Dreger. The Canucks, Oilers and Rangers have all shown interest in Eakins as well.

Eakins has spent four years coaching the Marlies in the AHL, going 157-114-41 and taking them to the playoffs in each of the last two years. Last season, the Marlies made it to the Calder Cup finals, where they were upended by Norfolk. He was previously an assistant coach with the Maples Leafs.

New Stars general manager Jim Nill has cleaned house in the front office and he fired head coach Glen Gulutzan in an attempt to remake a franchise that has not made the playoffs since 2008. Snagging Eakins, who is a hot commodity on the coaching market, would be Nill’s first major move with Dallas.

The Marlies are the Maple Leafs' AHL affiliate so the Stars had to receiver permission to speak with him.
