The New York Rangers have apparently closed in on Alain Vigneault as their search for a new head coach comes to a close.

Reports are circulating that the former Vancouver bench boss may be headed for Broadway.

The Rangers appear to be "zoning in" on hiring Alain Vigneault as the Rangers' new bench boss, according to a New York Post report. It was reported Friday night that Vigneault, former coach of the Vancouver Canucks, has asked Dallas Stars general manager Jim Nill to take himself out of the running for that job -- leading many to speculate that Vigneault is slated to become the new head man on Broadway as Vigneault apparently met with Rangers owner Jim Dolan on Friday as well.
All of this happened with Vigneault despite Ranger legend Mark Messier confirming his interest in the job on Friday.
“I told Glen I would have interest, so we’ve had discussions and that’s where it stands right now,” Messier told the Post. “Like anyone else interested in coaching, obviously the Rangers would be a dream come true.”
Vigneault's biggest claim to fame is having brought the Vancouver Canucks within one win of a Stanley Cup in 2011, though they lost the final two games of the series to the eventual champion Boston Bruins. The prospective Rangers head coach spent seven seasons coaching the Canucks, missing the postseason just once and winning the President's Trophy twice. He previously coached the Montreal Canadiens for parts of four seasons.
