The Calgary Flames offered the Colorado Avalanche three first-round selections in the 2013 NHL Draft in exchange for the No. 1 overall selection, according to Elliotte Friedman of CBC on Saturday night. Colorado rejected the proposal.

Calgary has submitted a proposal to Colorado in an attempt to acquire the No. 1 overall selection in the 2013 NHL Draft.

It has been public knowledge that the Avalanche are willing to entertain offers for the top pick. Patrick Roy stated on his first day as the team’s head coach and vice president of hockey operations that he believed it was something the franchise needed to consider. Since then, it has remained unclear how valuable the asset is.
According to Friedman, Calgary offered the No. 6, No. 22 and No. 28 overall selections in exchange for No. 1. The Flames were told it was not enough to get the deal done. Considering how deep the 2013 draft is supposed to be, three first-round picks could help fast-track a restructuring team. This applies to both Calgary and Colorado. Of course, prospect projection is an unstable undertaking. A first-round draft selection does not guarantee first-round caliber production at the NHL level.
While the broad net of three first-round picks might allow Calgary to select three top-tier players, it won’t be enough to catapult the organization into the company of the No. 1 pick.
Jonathan Drouin, Nathan MacKinnon and Seth Jones are considered the top-three prospects in this year’s draft class.
