The New York Islanders acquired Cal Clutterbuck from the Minnesota Wild for Nino Niederreiter, according to Newsday. Clutterbuck will be a restricted free agent on July 5.

The Islanders picked up restricted free agent Cal Clutterbuck in exchange for the former No. 5 overall pick in the draft.

The Wild had been trying to work out a new contract with Clutterbuck and offered him a one-year extension. With the Wild looking to cut salary before next season, when the salary cap comes down, Minnesota was limited in how much they could offer him.
While hoping to re-sign Clutterbuck, they were also open to trading him if they could not come to terms on a new deal, especially after a season that saw him score just four goals and add six assists in 2013. He was effective in adding physicality to the Wild, racking up 155 hits in 42 games, but Minnesota did not want to pay him what he would likely command as a free agent. The 25-year-old is coming off of a three-year, $4.2 million contract.
Niederreiter was the No. 5 overall pick in the 2010 NHL Draft, but demanded a trade after failing to make the team in training camp last season. He struggled as a rookie in 2011-12, notching just one point in 55 games. Now he get a fresh start in Minnesota.
