After a season where they went back to the playoffs for the first time in six years, the New York Islanders appear to be parting ways with their captain.
Mark Streit contract: Isles won’t re-sign captain, according to report
Defenseman spent four years with the Islanders, was named team captain before the 2011-12 season.

Defenseman Mark Streit will test the open market as an unrestricted free agent when the signing period begins on July 5, according to a report. Streit reportedly rejected the Islanders best offer. He becomes one of the first potential UFAs to be openly headed to the free agent signing period.
Streit spent five seasons as an Islander after signing a five-year, $20.5 million contract in the summer of 2008. He only played four full seasons with the team, as a torn labrum during pre-season forced him to miss the 2010-11 season. He’d put up no less than 47 points per season in each of his three full years with the team. In the lockout-shortened 2012-13 season, he had 21 assists and 27 points playing in all 48 games. He had two goals and three assists in the team’s Eastern Conference Quarterfinal series with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Many will now speculate that forward John Tavares, who was nominated for the Hart Trophy this season, will replace him as captain. That would be more likely to happen closer to next season, during training camp, rather than any time over the summer. Streit was named the first Swiss captain in NHL history prior to the 2011-12 season.
