NHL free agency 2013: Daniel Alfredsson talking with Bruins

After 17 years in Ottawa, Daniel Alfredsson may leave the Senators for the Bruins.

USA TODAY Sports

Daniel Alfredsson is coming back for the 2013-14 season, but it may not be with the Ottawa Senators. The 40-year-old has played his entire 17-year career with the Senators, but the Boston Bruins reached out to free agent and he seemed open to considering a new team.

Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli told Pierre LeBrun, “Yes, I have spoken to Alfie’s agent at length today.” The conversation went well enough that the two sides plan to talk again later.

When Alfredsson that he would not retire and instead return for another season, the assumption was that he would return to Ottawa. He is the face of the Senators and a hero in the city after such a long career with the organization and seeing him with another team seems crazy. But it might happen.

Alfredsson has never won a Stanley Cup and the Bruins are certainly a contender after advancing to the Final this season. They need another forward after the departure of Nathan Horton and it is unlikely that Jaromir Jagr returns so Alfredsson would be able to join a team that needs him. He may not be the great player he used to be, but after scoring 10 goals and adding 16 assists in 47 games last season, he clearly has something left in the tank.

The Senators are still an option for Alfredsson. The team has made it clear that they want him back, but now there is another option and as crazy as it may seem for Alfredsson to leave Ottawa, it has emerged as a real option.
