NHL free agency: Panthers sign Scott Gomez to one-year deal
The Panthers have signed Gomez to provide a veteran presence for their young team.

"Scott is a veteran center who adds further depth to the middle of our lineup," said general manager Dave Tallon. "He is a quick and skilled forward, with a wealth of hockey experience including two Stanley Cup titles, who will be a leader for our younger players."
Gomez had 15 points in 39 games for the San Jose Sharks last season and played in nine of the team's 11 playoff games. He was paid just $700,000 after being bought out by the Montreal Canadiens prior to the season and gave the Sharks a good veteran presence.
The Panthers will hope that Gomez can give them the same presence, especially with such a young team. The team has spent much of the last three years stockpiling draft picks, many of whom are now NHL ready. That means Florida will be packed with kids, and Gomez, along with Ed Jovanovski, Brian Campbell and Mike Mottau, will be charged with helping bring them along.
