NHL free agency 2013: Ryan Jones re-signs with Oilers

The Oilers re-signed Ryan Jones with the hope that he can find his form of two and three years ago.

USA TODAY Sports

Ryan Jones is returning to the Edmonton Oilers after re-signing with the club. Jones was an unrestricted free agent, but chose to return to Edmonton on a one-year deal.

Jones scored two goals and added five assists for the Oilers last season, but his season was marred by an eye injury he suffered during the lockout. It limited him to just 27 games, but he returned to full health and is expected to be ready to go at the start of training camp.

The Oilers are hoping Jones can play like he did in 2010-11 and 2011-12, when he totaled 25 and 33 points respectively, but he is still a bottom six forward. He gives the Oilers a strong penalty killer and a tough, physical left winger more than anything.

Terms of the contract were not released, but he is coming off of a two-year, $3 million deal and was expected to get a similar payday this time around.
