NHL free agency 2013: Derek Roy agrees to one-year deal with Blues

The Blues are banking that Derek Roy will regain his scoring touch next season.

The St. Louis Blues have agreed to a one-year contract with Derek Roy and will be completed pending a physical. According to Aaron Ward, the deal will be worth $4 million.

Roy scored seven goals and totaled 21 assists in 2013, which he split between the Dallas Stars and Vancouver Canucks. There was a time when he was a monster offensive center, having topped 60 points in four consecutive seasons from 2006-07 to 2009-10, but he hasn't reached 45 points in the three years since.

In 2010-11, Roy struggled with injuries and the following season didn’t go well for him. He has hoped that a big 2013 would earn him a big money, long-term contract this offseason, but it didn’t come. Now he is heading to St. Louis hoping that he can turn a big 2013-14 into that lucrative contract next summer.

The Blues hoped to sign a offensive center this offseason and Roy may fit the mold. He’s been an offensive menace before and if he can do it again, St. Louis will have the player they started the offseason in search of.
