NHL free agency: Douglas Murray comes to terms with Canadiens

The Montreal Canadiens have come to terms on a contract with free agent defenseman Douglas Murray.

USA TODAY Sports

The Montreal Canadiens have come to terms on a one-year contract with unrestricted free agent defenseman Douglas Murray, the team announced Thursday morning. The deal is for $1.5 million, according to TSN.

Murray spent time last season with the San Jose Sharks before being traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins prior to the trade deadline. The 33-year-old defenseman was entering the final year of a four-year, $10 million contract that carried an annual average value of $2.5 million against the salary cap, which made him a candidate as a playoff rental.

Listed at 6’3, 245 pounds on Hockey-Reference.com, Murray adds size to the Canadiens blue line. Of course, he is not known for his mobility, which is a common criticism brought against him.

In 465 career regular season games, Murray has averaged 17:31 of ice time and registered 370 penalty minutes with 62 points (seven goals, 55 assists).
