The Washington Capitals have come to terms on a contractual agreement with unrestricted free agent forward Mikhail Grabovski, the team announced Friday morning. The two-sides agreed to a one-year, $3 million deal.

Grabovski had a rocky split with his former team, the Toronto Maple Leafs, after the club utilized a compliance buyout on the remaining four-years of his five-year, $27.5 million contract. Speculation had permeated about Grabovski's contentious relationship with head coach Randy Carlyle, which centered on the forward's limited playing time. This speculation became public fact when Grabovski blasted his former coach in a phone interview with Jonas Siegel of TSN.
The Capitals decision to acquire Grabovski has been universally lauded as a positive addition to the club. Grabovski is a player capable of driving possession, which is viewed as a key attribute in creating offensive production. In addition, if a team has the puck, their opponent doesn’t, which in turn helps the defensive aspect of the game as well.
SB Nation’s Japers’ Rink wrote about how the Capitals should consider acquiring Grabovski nearly two months ago. It’s probably safe to say that they’re happy about the signing.
