The Ottawa Senators and restricted free agent defenseman Jared Cowen still remain at odds in negotiations for a new contract.
Jared Cowen, Senators looking to find common ground in negotiation
Jared Cowen is still without a contract, as the Ottawa Senators open training camp.
The 22-year-old is seeking a contract that pays $3.5 million per season over a term of three-to-five years, according to Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun. The Senators were apparently willing to pay that annual salary, albeit over the span of an eight-year, maximum term contract, which apparently is not something Cowen is interested in. Ottawa is also willing to negotiate a shorter term deal but have set a range of $2.5 million to $2.8 million.
Cowen completed the final year of his entry-level contract in 2013 after playing only seven regular season games with the team after sustaining a torn labrum while playing in the American Hockey League during the lockout. At the time, it was believed that Cowen would miss the entirety of the 2013 campaign.
Cowen averaged 20:17 of ice time during the regular season and recorded three points over the span of 10 postseason games.
