The Ottawa Senators have made some progress with Jared Cowen but still have a ways to go before a new contract is agreed upon.

Garrioch cites a source who says the Senators are proposing $11.2 million over four-years, while Cowen’s representatives are looking for $12.2 million.

Claus AndersenThe 22-year-old is seeking a contract that pays $3.5 million per season over a term of three-to-five years, according to Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun. The Senators were apparently willing to pay that annual salary, albeit over the span of an eight-year, maximum term contract, which apparently is not something Cowen is interested in. Ottawa is also willing to negotiate a shorter term deal but have set a range of $2.5 million to $2.8 million.
Cowen completed the final year of his entry-level contract in 2013 after playing only seven regular season games with the team after sustaining a torn labrum while playing in the American Hockey League during the lockout. At the time, it was believed that Cowen would miss the entirety of the 2013 campaign.
