Blues release Ryan Whitney from player tryout

The St. Louis Blues are in the process of setting their roster for the 2013-14 season, and it will not include defenseman Ryan Whitney.

Whitney was released from his PTO with the Blues on Friday, after spending training camp with the team. He only saw limited action during the pre-season, and most thought him only a fall-back option should Alex Pietrangelo not sign a new contract with the team. With both Pietrangelo and Kevin Shattenkirk signed long-term, Whitney becomes somewhat of a redundancy.

After coming up with through the Pittsburgh Penguins system, Whitney has bounced around a bit since being traded to Anaheim in 2009 in the Chris Kunitz deal, the season Pittsburgh won the Stanley Cup. He spent a season and a half with the Ducks, before being traded again to the Edmonton Oilers. He played out that contract, but spent a lot of it injured.

The 30-year-old Whitney is also a former Olympian, having played on the silver medal-winning Team USA at the Vancouver Games in 2010.
