Years of stagnation and a 6-3 thrashing at home to the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday spelled the end for Winnipeg's coaching staff, as the Jets fired coach Claude Noel on Sunday morning, according to TSN's Darren Dreger.

The Jets also relieved assistant coach Perry Pern of his duties and hired former Carolina Hurricanes coach Paul Maurice to replace Noel. Maurice went 384-391-99 during two stints in Carolina, reaching the playoffs four times while making a Stanley Cup Final appearance in 2002.
Noel finishes his tenure in Winnipeg with a 80-79-18 record, but the ride has been less than smooth. The Jets failed to make the playoffs in all three seasons with Noel at the helm, and the team currently sits last in the Central Division after losing seven of its last 10 games.
Noel struggled to get much out of his top players. He clashed with Evander Kane, lost Alexander Burmistrov to the KHL and saw Ondrej Pavelec take steps back in his development. After so much hype and so little delivery when the Jets returned to Winnipeg, the writing was on the wall for Noel.
