Jimmy Howard was nearly flawless for the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday night, stopping 47 of the 48 shots he faced in New York against the Rangers.
Jimmy Howard loses a tough one on fluke goal
This is a tough way to lose if you made 47 saves.
So what happened on that one shot? A microcosm of the Red Wings’ season.
That’s just too bad.
Mats Zuccarello's shot deflected off the stick of Red Wings defenseman Brian Lashoff and harmlessly hopped over Howard into the net for the only goal of the game.
And with that, the Red Wings are now three points behind the Rangers in the Eastern Conference playoff race and are quickly sliding down the standings.
The Red Wings managed to get 38 shots of their own on Henrik Lundqvist but couldn't get one past him. As far as 1-0 games go this was probably as entertaining as they get. Unless you're a Red Wings fan or Jimmy Howard. Then it was probably pure torture.
