Hockey Canada names Sidney Crosby captain for 2014 Winter Olympics

Jonathan Toews and Shea Weber are alternates.

In a move that should surprise no one, Pittsburgh Penguins center Sidney Crosby was named captain of Team Canada for the 2014 Winter Olympics on Sunday.

Nashville Predators defenseman Shea Weber and Chicago Blackhawks center Jonathan Toews were named alternate captains. All three players are currently captains of their respective NHL teams.

Crosby will captain Canada in just his second appearance in the Winter Olympics. He's already a Canadian hero for his game-winning overtime goal in the gold medal game against the United States in 2010, so captaincy seems like a natural progression. He takes over the role from Scott Niedermayer, who retired a couple of seasons ago. Crosby is the second Penguin to captain Canada in the last four Olympics, as Mario Lemieux wore the "C" in 2002.
