Apparently scoring overtime winners pays off. Literally.
Wild sign Marco Scandella to 5-year contract extension
Score overtime goals. Get paid.
After scoring the game-winning overtime goal for the second time in 13 days on Friday, Wild defenseman Marco Scandella inked a five-year contract extension on Saturday. The deal is reportedly worth $20 million.
Scandella is just in his second full season in Minnesota, but the 24-year-old has already shown a knack for sparking the Wild's offense. After registering three goals and 17 points in 76 games last season, Scandella already has five goals and eight points in 20 games in 2014. He scored the game-winning goals in overtime against the Winnipeg Jets on Nov. 16 and against the Dallas Stars on Friday, and he also put in the eventual deciding goal in the third period against Boston Bruins in a game in October.
By locking him up for five years, the Wild only take a $4 million cap hit per year and keep an important part of their burgeoning young blueline in play.
