Red Wings vs. Capitals: Gustav Nyquist scores hat trick

Nyquist singlehandedly brought the Wings back into the game.

Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

If Sweden ever needs extra forward help in Sochi in a few weeks, Detroit Red Wings forward Gustav Nyquist made a pretty big case for himself on Sunday.

Nyquist scored three goals against the Washington Capitals, dragging his team back from multiple two-goal deficits to keep the game alive.

A big reason why was his net presence. When the Capitals coughed up rebounds, Nyquist was there to pounce.

That first period goal got the Red Wings on the board after two quick goals from the Capitals. When Washington reestablished a two-goal lead in the second period, Nyquist brought Detroit back within one.

Nyquist completed the hat trick and the comeback in one stroke thanks to a terrific pass from Henrik Zetterberg in the third period.

There’s no question this game is important for both teams’ playoff chances. The Red Wings owe Nyquist dinner or something.
