Alex Ovechkin scores 50th goal of season

It’s been a few years, but Alex Ovechkin is a 50-goal scorer once again.

Tommy Gilligan-USA TODAY Sports

Of all the 50-goal seasons that have happened in the NHL, none will be as scrutinized, dissected and analyzed as much as the one Alex Ovechkin has put together in 2013-14.

He reached the mark for the fifth time in his career (and for the first time since 2009-10) on Tuesday in the most fitting way possible: Blasting a one-timer on the power play from just inside the faceoff dot, the exact spot he has scored so many of his goals this season.

Only one other player in the NHL this season has scored at least 40 goals (Anaheim’s Corey Perry has 42).

The combination of his awful plus-minus and the lack of team success has been the focal point this season, but no matter your thoughts on any of that or him as a player, 50 goals in this era is still pretty unbelievable.
