Stanley Cup Final: Rangers and Kings exchange body blows in first period

Game 2 got off to a physical start.

Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports

The New York Rangers and Los Angeles Kings wasted no time in Game 2 before trying to beat each other into pulps.

The first period of Game 2 was easily the most physical twenty minutes of the Stanley Cup Final so far, as each team dished out a couple of devastating body blows to set the tone early.

Kings forward Jeff Carter was the first victim when he received a hard hip check from Rangers defenseman Ryan McDonagh just minutes into the game.

But Los Angeles retaliated quickly. Jarret Stoll briefly injured New York defenseman Dan Girardi with a vicious check along the boards about midway through the period.

Both Girardi and Stoll went to their respective locker rooms after the hits. But then they came back because it's the Stanley Cup Final and health isn't important.

You just knew that the physicality would cross the line at some point, and McDonagh obliged when he shoved Dustin Brown to the ice away from the play with about four minutes left in the period.

Get those ice packs ready, because Game 2 is already painful.
