Ryan Suter suspended 2 games for elbowing Steve Downie

This is the first suspension of Suter’s career.

Ryan Suter didn't escape NHL punishment for very long after elbowing an opposing player.

The Minnesota Wild defenseman was reportedly suspended for two games by the NHL on Wednesday, just a day after Suter knocked Pittsburgh Penguins winger Steve Downie out of the game with an elbow to the head.

The elbowing went unpenalized, but Downie was forced to leave the game for precautionary reasons. The veteran forward has struggled with concussions in the past.

The NHL Department of Player Safety explained the decision by pointing out that Suter had already finished the play and went out of his way to elbow Downie. This is the first time Suter has been suspended in his career.
