Goaltending face masks are normally impervious to most dangers. Pucks, sticks, players extremities are normally stopped by the cages netminders wear on their face. Not so much for Marc-Andre Fleury, who took the full force of a stick to the face, from his own teammate no less.

A mask couldn’t protect this one.


On a clear defensive play by blue liner Ben Lovejoy, who was jockeying for better position in front of the crease, the defenseman's stick found itself lodged in Fleury's face mask, cutting the netminder below the eye.

— Stephanie (@myregularface) November 12, 2015 Backup goaltender Jeff Zatkoff went into the game after Fleury rushed to the locker room to get checked out, but the starter returned mere moments after being cut and resumed his position between the pipes for Pittsburgh.
