Connor McDavid suffers ‘long-term’ injury after collision with boards

McDavid’s arm is reportedly in a sling.

The Edmonton Oilers lost the brightest spot of their season on Tuesday when Connor McDavid injured his shoulder in the second period.

McDavid was trying to get around two Philadelphia Flyers defensemen in a speedy rush into the offensive zone when all three of them lost their balance and collided into the end boards. The impact was substantial enough to hear it loud and clear from the rafters, which is never a good sign.

McDavid did indeed get to his feet slowly and clutched his shoulder the entire way back to the Oilers bench. Trainers convinced him to retreat to the locker room, and a few minutes later the bad news trickled out onto social media that McDavid was done for the night.

Losing McDavid would be a huge blow for the Oilers. The 2015 first overall pick has already paid huge dividends in Edmonton, ranking 15th in the NHL in points while skating on a line with Benoit Pouliot and Nail Yakupov. McDavid was named the NHL's rookie of the month for October.

The Oilers confirmed after the game that McDavid’s recovery time will not be short.

Correction: A previous version of this article stated the Oilers had placed McDavid on long-term injured reserve based on a Tweet from a Flyers beat writer. That report wasn’t corroborated by anyone else and the Oilers had yet to place McDavid on IR by Wednesday morning.
