With Toronto Maple Leafs goalies James Reimer nursing an injury and Jonathan Bernier playing some of the worst hockey of his career, Leafs rookie Garrett Sparks earned his first NHL start Tuesday night.

Sports, man.
He ran with it. Sparks made 24 saves, shutting out the Oilers to become the first Maple Leafs goalie to pitch a shutout during his NHL debut. It was a great moment for the rookie, made even better by his postgame interview. The tears flowed and a great sports moment appeared out of nowhere.
Here’s hoping for more great nights like this from Sparks, if only because his name offers so many pun opportunities.
