Winnipeg Jets reportedly facing $152 million in contract demands from 3 impending free agents

Ladd, Byfuglien and Trouba all want hefty price tags this summer.

We all knew the contract situation in Winnipeg would be a mess this summer. According to reports, the mess will be even pricier than anyone imagined.

Three major players in Andrew Ladd, Dustin Byfuglien and Jacob Trouba come off the books for the Jets in the offseason, and the Winnipeg Free Press reports each has made their personal contract demands known. The total bill for all three is reportedly worth more than $152 million.

The NHL salary cap is expected to rise more than $3 million, but if each player got what he is asking for, the Jets would be on the hook for a $20 million cap hit for three players. The Jets currently have $10 million in cap space. It’s unlikely any of those players end up with contracts that steep, but it doesn’t make the Jets bargaining position any easier.

Both Ladd and Byfuglien are unrestricted free agents and could seek those terms elsewhere as soon as July 1 comes. Trouba is a restricted free agent coming off his rookie deal, meaning teams would have to send Winnipeg a ton of draft picks if he agrees to a deal elsewhere.
