Devils chase Detroit goaltender Jimmy Howard with three goals in two minutes

A first period offensive outburst from New Jersey had Howard heading for the bench.

A bad combination of spotty goaltending and soft defensive coverage has given Detroit goaltender Jimmy Howard the hook with just 14 minutes of playing time in their game against the visiting Devils Tuesday evening. The Red Wings starting goaltender let in three goals on six shots, all coming from right in front of the Detroit net that put New Jersey up 3-0 in quite a quick fashion.

The Devils tallied just three goals in their last three games, but pounced on the Detroit mistakes to stretch quite a lead over their opponents after 20 minutes. New Jersey's first goal from Kyle Palmieri took a difficult hop off the boards to the slot where the forward was speeding through with two Wings defenders cruising behind him.

Jordin Tootoo got New Jersey's second 42 seconds later after bouncing off a check along the boards before tapping home the puck glove side on Howard while Detroit's defense continued to coast around in front of its netminder.

David Schlemko got the final tally a minute and a half later, capitalizing on the time and space he was given by the defense to wrist one in tight with zero traffic in front by Howard.

Petr Mrazek took over in net for Howard and the Red Wings were able to get one back on a power play goal by Dylan Larkin to head to the second period down 3-1.
