After a month of speculation, the NHL officially announced two women’s pro hockey league teams will square off outdoors as part of the 2016 Winter Classic event in Boston.
NHL officially adds Outdoor Women’s Classic to 2016 Winter Classic event
Women’s pro hockey comes to NHL’s biggest holiday event.

The first-ever Outdoor Women’s Classic will be an “abbreviated exhibition game” at 2 p.m. ET on December 31 at Gillette Stadium in Boston. The game will feature the Boston Pride of the National Women’s Hockey League and Les Canadiennes of the Canadian Women’s Hockey League.
The game is probably "abbreviated" because the Winter Classic Alumni Game takes place a little over an hour later. The Montreal Canadiens and Boston Bruins will do battle in the Winter Classic proper on New Year's Day.
“Two days with three Boston-Montreal rival match-ups is a great way to celebrate hockey,” said Bill Daly, NHL Deputy Commissioner. “A new year signifies a new chapter and we look forward to sharing the ice for the first time with two professional women’s teams on the League’s biggest stage.”
Fans can watch the Outdoor Women’s Classic on television and online, since the league announced both NHL Network and NHL.com will provide live coverage of the historic event.
