Montreal opens the scoring against Boston on strange midsection deflection

Montreal typical.

Eric Bolte-USA TODAY Sports

We're three weeks out from the 2016 Winter Classic featuring the Bruins and Canadiens, but the NHL was kind enough to give us a preview of the action Wednesday night in Montreal. In a first period dominated by the Canadiens in the shot count, Montreal got out ahead after quite a strange deflection.

Montreal's Paul Byron looped the puck up and over the net from behind the red line, hoping for some sort of stick deflection from Tomas Plekanec in front. Instead, either Plekanec or Bruins defenseman Zach Trotman had the puck deflect off their midsections and down where goaltender Tuukka Rask could not reach. Byron eventually got credit for the goal, as it deflected off of Trotman and missed Plekanec completely.

Good things happen when you get the puck to the net, and the Canadiens most definitely benefited from it this time on this goal.
