NHL scores 2015: Sedins rescue Canucks in overtime, Red Wings stumble in Pittsburgh

Hockey’s second act on Wednesday was worth the wait.

Three meager NHL games on Wednesday night had a tall task awaiting them: they had to follow the first huge trade news of the trade deadline season.

Topping the long-rumored Evander Kane trade to Buffalo seemed too difficult an objective, but then six teams threw out a last-gasp comeback, an overtime win and a tight game that went down to the wire. Such is hockey. There's not a dull moment on or off the ice this time of year.

Scores

Penguins 4, Red Wings 1

Canucks 5, Blackhawks 4 (OT)

Capitals 5, Sharks 4 (OT)

Three things we learned

1. The Red Wings played passively and paid for it.

Detroit came out of the gates half-asleep against Pittsburgh and it pretty much cost them the game. Pittsburgh had no trouble advancing into the Wings’ zone early while receiving minimal push back in the dirty areas. The result was a quick 3-0 deficit by the midway point that Detroit couldn’t climb out of. The Red Wings can’t really afford to let that become the norm at this stage of the season.

2. The Sedins saved the Canucks.

Boy, wasn't it nice to just talk about Henrik Sedin and Daniel Sedin's on-ice performance on Wednesday night? The Vancouver duo combined on the team's final two goals, including the game-winner in overtime. Watching the twins take over a game isn't something that happens on a nightly basis like it used to, and it was a entertaining to watch them lead Vancouver back from the brink of collapse.

3. Burns continues to be the Sharks’ MVP.

It’s weird to think that Brett Burns has gone from an injury-prone defenseman with upside in Minnesota to a bonafide offensive defenseman stud in San Jose. Burns jumped into the top-three in NHL defenseman scoring with two goals in twenty seconds on Wednesday.

Impact Moment

As cool as it was to see the Sedin twins at work, it was more unexpected and awesome to watch Marian Hossa blaze down the ice to score like he was ten years younger.

Stat of the Night

So even if the Jets don't make the playoffs after trading for Tyler Myers and Drew Stafford at least they can reach the top shelf for cookies to eat away their sadness.
