David Clarkson starts two fights, gets ejected for suspendable hit in 1st period

He’s making $5.25 million this season.

The calls for the Maple Leafs to find some way to jettison David Clarkson and his enormous contract will grow louder after he was ejected for earning three major penalties in the first period on Saturday.

By the box score's count, Clarkson was only on the ice for 2:31 against the Montreal Canadiens. But he sure made it a busy two minutes. Just three minutes after the first puck drop, Clarkson instigated a fight with Habs bruiser Brandon Prust. According to TSN's Bob McKenzie, the two hate each other. So I suppose that fight could be explained away. Clarkson got five minutes for fighting and two for unsportsmanlike conduct.

But then Clarkson laid this hit on Sergei Gonchar out of nowhere, which could land him a suspension.

Clarkson got five minutes for interference and a ten minute game misconduct. Oh, and another five minutes for fighting Nathan Beaulieu after the hit.

What a period, and what a way to encourage your management to get rid of you before the upcoming trade deadline. Remember, Clarkson is in the second year of a seven-year deal paying him $5.25 million per season. Money well spent?
