NHL schedule 2015: Stars, Avalanche need wins to keep playoffs in reach

They probably won’t make it, but at least they’ll try on Friday.

Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

What slim hopes the Avalanche and Stars have of making the playoffs this season will be put on the line on Friday.

Dallas hosts the St. Louis Blues, a division rival that just locked up their own playoff berth the night before. The Stars sit six points back of Winnipeg in the eighth seed with a few games remaining. The Kings' win over the Oilers on Thursday night puts their chances on life support, but the good news is that the Stars play very well against the Blues. If they can continue that trend at home then they could stave off elimination for one more day.

Elsewhere, the Colorado Avalanche visit the Western Conference-leading Anaheim Ducks on Friday. Colorado's position is even more precarious: they sit eight points back of Winnipeg and nine points back of Calgary in the Pacific. What little hope they have lies in the chances they gain a lead in Anaheim and keep it. That, however, is as tall a task as any this season: the Ducks are among the league's best in third period comebacks.
