Oilers lose Ryan Nugent-Hopkins ‘long-term’ to hand injury

Edmonton’s 4-2 victory over Florida has come with a price.

The list of injured first overall picks gets longer for the Edmonton Oilers. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, the team's third overall scorer this year, will be out "long term" after breaking his hand Monday night against the Florida Panthers.

The team announced after its victory over visiting Florida that Nugent-Hopkins will be out for a considerable amount of time. The 22-year-old forward left Edmonton’s game after blocking a shot with his hand and did not return, signaling something more serious than just a bruise or a sprain.

Nugent-Hopkins rounds out the Oilers' top three in scoring this season with 29 points in 45 games -- 21 of those coming as assists on the second line.

As if things couldn’t get worse for the Oilers and their young core this season.
