Coyotes player breaks his leg after awkward fall

Brad Richardson had to be taken off the ice in what looked like serious pain.

A scary scene unfolded in Vancouver on Thursday night, when Coyotes forward Brad Richardson was involved in an awkward collision in the middle of the second period.

Here’s a different angle with a bit clearer video, though from a higher vantage point.

It’s a freaky play, and the collision with Canucks defenseman Nikita Tryamkin is by all means an accident. Richardson falls backward with all his weight on his right leg, bending in a way that is not healthy.

Trainers and medical staff members from both teams came out to assist Richardson, who needed a stretcher to leave the ice.

The Coyotes forward was down on the ice for a few long moments before the stretcher was brought out and trainers were able to elevate his leg.

Update: It’s a broken fibula and tibia for Richardson, per the Coyotes.

Richardson is still stable in the hospital and a recovery plan is underway.
