Maple Leafs trade goalie James Reimer to Sharks for Alex Stalock

The teams swap backup goalies.

James Reimer is free.

The oft-criticized (fairly or not) goaltender for the Toronto Maple Leafs is in a new home on Saturday after the Leafs traded him to the San Jose Sharks for fellow backup netminder Alex Stalock.

The Maple Leafs also sent minor league forward Jeremy Morin to San Jose, while the Sharks sent back forward Ben Smith and a conditional fourth round pick in 2018. No salary was retained by either team in the deal.

Reimer has put up good, if not great, numbers behind an ever-declining Toronto Maple Leafs squad over the last few seasons. In his career in Toronto, Reimer posted a 85-76-23 record with a .914 save percentage, a 2.83 goals-against average and 11 shutouts. He’s been particularly effective this season when healthy with a 2.49 GAA and a .918 SV%.

The Sharks likely view him as a good upgrade over Stalock if starter Martin Jones ever gets injured.

Stalock’s year in net for San Jose has been underwhelming at best, with a 2.94 GAA and a .884 SV% in 13 games. That won’t bother the Maple Leafs, since they’d probably rather tank for the first overall pick anyways.
