Devils retire Martin Brodeur’s number with a statue and a fantastic ceremony

Quite a sendoff for the NHL legend.

New Jersey Devils legend Martin Brodeur got the rarest of honors on Tuesday, as the franchise he spent 20 years with retired his number and erected a statue in his honor.

Brodeur, one of the best goalies in NHL history, retired just two seasons ago. But the Devils clearly didn’t want to waste any time cementing his status as the best player in franchise history.

Brodeur’s statue was actually revealed on Monday, and the 43-year-old couldn’t hold back his tears at the sight.

He even made a point to pose next to the statue after his jersey retirement was over the next day!

Brodeur was given a truly royal entrance by current Devils players as he made his way to the stage.

The rest of the ceremony was phenomenal. Brodeur was introduced by former general manager Lou Lamoriello and gave a moving speech. You can watch the whole thing below:

Brodeur holds the NHL records for regular season wins (691), shutouts (125), and games played (1,266) all while backstopping the Devils to three Stanley Cup wins and five Eastern Conference titles. He led New Jersey to the playoffs in 17 of his 20 seasons with the club and even won two Olympic gold medals for Canada on the side.
