The 2016 NHL Draft is upon us. The NHL's 30 teams will kick off the 2016-17 league year with the annual event at First Niagara Center in Buffalo, N.Y.
NHL Draft 2016: Time and TV schedule for Friday’s 1st round
The first overall pick, held by the Toronto Maple Leafs, is essentially guaranteed to be Auston Matthews. The 18-year-old center from Arizona lit up the Swiss pro league this season and is the consensus best player in the draft.
Whether the Winnipeg Jets and Columbus Blue Jackets keep the second and third overall picks, respectively, will be interesting to watch. No doubt numerous teams will be gunning for the chance to draft either Patrik Laine or Jesse Puljujarvi in those spots.
On the trade front, it could be a busy night -- it almost always is on Night 1 of the NHL Draft.
Expect a three-hour jaunt tonight, as 30 teams run through Round 1 beginning at 7 p.m. ET from First Niagara Center, home of the Buffalo Sabres. Everybody will reconvene on Saturday morning for Rounds 2 through 7, which will take another three hours to complete. All in all, 211 picks will be made.
